The C. Waldo Scott Center is a non-profit agency serving youth and families in Newport News, VA.  The Scott Center provides multi-discipline services to youth ages 6-18, family members, and others in need.  The Scott Center currently have opening in the following positions.

 

 

bulletYouth Leadership Program

Dear Applicant & Guardian, Thank you for your interest in the Wickham Avenue Alliance’s (WAA) Youth Leadership Program! This is a new eight-week program designed to give 20 youth an opportunity to gain work experience and explore careers in cultural arts, education, information services, recreation, sports, and youth development. Youth Leaders will serve as positive role models to program participants and be responsible for assisting staff conduct group activities during the eight-week summer programs (June 15 through August 15) offered at each site. The opportunity to become a WAA Youth Leader is open to all individuals aged 13 to 17 who not only wish to explore careers but give back to their community and receive a stipend of $25 each week!


Youth Leaders will serve at the C. Waldo Scott Center, Doris Miller Community Center, Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center, and Pearl Bailey Library. Applicants will state their preferred location but final assignment will be made by the WAA committee. We will do our best to place applicants with their preferred location, however all location requests will not be guaranteed.


If you are interested in becoming a Youth Leader, the application deadline is Friday, May 16, 2008. All applicants must be at least 13 by June 30, 2008. Once applications are completed, applicants will be interviewed. Tentative dates for interviews are Wednesday, May 21 and  Thursday, May 22. There will be leadership development training and orientation prior to the start of the summer programs in June. You will receive information concerning training dates and times, if you are selected.

bulletProgram Assistant/Program Assistant (Summer Hire)

The Scott Center is seeking (1) Program Assistant and (2) Program Assistants (summer hire) to work with youth ages 6-18, who are enrolled in various programs/services.  Program Assistants are responsible for assisting staff in the implementation of assigned Center programs/services; assist with maintaining a safe and orderly Center environment, provide appropriate guidance, assistance, and supervision of Center members; and assist in the implementation of other related duties and responsibilities, which ensure the proper daily operation of the program.  Ideal candidate is energetic, task-oriented, shows initiative, enjoy working with youth, and able to work well with others.  Candidate must have the ability to effectively interact with the public, Center members, and other employees; knowledge of child development and appropriate behavior modification skills; and ability to engage in physical indoor and outdoor activities with youth members.  Candidate must be at least 18 years old; must posses a high school diploma or equivalent; have at least one year of related experience working with youth.  Contingent upon experience, starting wage is $6.00- $8.00 per hour.  Part-time and seasonal position, no benefits.

Program Assistants- 25-30 hours per week, working afternoons, evenings, and some weekends.  Application deadline:  Open until filled.

Program Assistants (Summer hires)- work approximately 35 hours per week, schedule hours range from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Schedule begins June 13- August 16, 2008.  Application deadline:  May 30, 2008

bulletProgram Facilitator

The C. Waldo Scott Center is seeking a Program Facilitator to implement a youth tobacco prevention program for 1st thru 6th graders.  The program uses a research-based curriculum.  Facilitator will also provide educational information as requested.  Part-time grant funded position through the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation; grant approved through June 2009.  Work approx. 25 hours per week, early afternoons and evenings (during after school program hours) and flexible schedule during summer programming.  Salary:  $15,600 per program year, approx. $12.00 per hour.  Candidate should possess effective communication skills, group facilitation skills, and knowledge of child development.  Prefer candidate with at least a Bachelor's degree in health, education, human services, or related field.  Must have satisfactory criminal background check and child protective service check.  Send resume to C. The C. Waldo Scott Center is seeking a Contractual Facilitators to facilitate groups for youth ages 6 to 17 regarding various prevention educational groups and groups for parents/adults.  Facilitation early afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays; flexible schedules during summer programming.  Contractual services are part-time, no benefits.  Contractual pay is contingent upon experience and program/service delivery.  Send resume to C.
